Siemens HMI not working: what the symptom tells you

A dead KTP or Comfort Panel rarely means a dead machine — the S7 PLC underneath is almost always still running its program. Match your symptom below, see what each fix really takes, and put a temporary screen on the machine today, from a phone — before any hardware ships.

Fix paths and what they really take

Three realistic paths: repair the unit (typically $300–$1,000 and 1–2 weeks — cheapest when the fault is display-related), replace the panel (a new one arrives empty until the HMI project is downloaded from TIA Portal), or a used unit (fast on paper — no warranty, and the project download is still required). Meanwhile: the operator's screen on a phone

Siemens panel questions

Why is my Siemens KTP or Comfort Panel screen blank?

Most common causes, in order of likelihood: the 24 VDC supply or fuse feeding the panel; a dead backlight (shine a flashlight at an angle — a faint image means the display still works); a failed display assembly; or a unit that no longer boots. Power and backlight faults are repairable for far less than a replacement panel.

Can the machine run while the Siemens HMI is being repaired or replaced?

Usually yes. The S7 PLC keeps executing its program — the panel is only the operator's window. A temporary HMI restores visibility and control without touching the PLC program. The free LineKeeper app connects to S7-300/400/1200/1500 controllers over S7comm from an iPhone or iPad and gives the operator live values, start/stop buttons and alarms.

Can I just buy the same Siemens panel and swap it in?

Only partly. A new panel arrives empty: the HMI project must be downloaded to it from TIA Portal (WinCC) — which needs the project file and a compatible TIA Portal version. If you don't have the project, the OEM or the original integrator does; ask early — their schedule is now part of your downtime. Budget for the download and test, not just the hardware.

My S7-1200/1500 refuses the app connection — why?

Almost always one of Siemens' two factory defaults: PUT/GET communication is disabled, or the data blocks are "optimized" and have no absolute addresses. The app detects the refusal and shows the exact TIA Portal steps for each case — enable PUT/GET in the CPU's Protection settings and untick optimized block access on the DBs you want to read.

How does the phone reach the PLC?

The phone must be on the same network as the controller — plant Wi-Fi that routes to the PLC VLAN, or a wired connection through a USB-C Ethernet adapter. There is no cloud relay: if a laptop on that network can ping the PLC, the app can connect.

Our line mixes Siemens and Allen-Bradley — two apps?

Is it safe to connect an app to a production PLC?

Browsing and dashboards only read values — the same polling load as one extra HMI. Writing a value is always deliberate: every write asks for confirmation and is validated against the point's type and limits, and hold-to-run buttons release the moment the app loses focus.
