Siemens HMI not working: what the symptom tells you

A dead KTP or Comfort Panel rarely means a dead machine — the S7 PLC underneath is almost always still running its program. Match your symptom below, see what each fix really takes, and put a temporary screen on the machine today, from a phone — before any hardware ships.

Fix paths and what they really take

  • Repair the unit (backlight, touch layer, PSU): typically $300–$1,000 and 1–2 weeks with a repair service — cheapest when the fault is display-related.
  • Replace the panel: availability varies by model, and a new panel arrives empty — the HMI project must be downloaded from TIA Portal (WinCC), which needs the project file and a compatible TIA Portal version. If the OEM or an integrator holds the project, their schedule is now part of your downtime.
  • Used unit: fastest on paper — unknown service hours, no warranty, and the project download is still required.

Siemens panel questions

Can the machine legally/safely run without its HMI?

The PLC keeps executing its program and all safety logic regardless of the panel. What you lose is visibility (values, alarms) and control (start/stop, setpoints) — exactly what a temporary HMI restores. Your own safety procedures and local regulations still apply, of course.

Why does the replacement need TIA Portal?

The panel's screens live in the HMI project, not in the panel hardware. A new panel is an empty screen until the project is downloaded to it from TIA Portal (WinCC) — and that needs the project file plus a compatible Portal version. If you don't have the project, the OEM or the original integrator does; ask early, their lead time counts.

My S7-1200/1500 refuses the app connection — why?

Almost always one of Siemens' two factory defaults: PUT/GET communication is disabled, or the data blocks are "optimized" and have no absolute addresses. The app detects the refusal and shows the exact TIA Portal steps for each case — enable PUT/GET in the CPU's Protection settings and untick optimized block access on the DBs you want to read.

How does the phone reach the PLC?

The phone must be on the same network as the controller — plant Wi-Fi that routes to the PLC VLAN, or a wired connection through a USB-C Ethernet adapter. There is no cloud relay: if a laptop on that network can ping the PLC, the app can connect.

Our line mixes Siemens and Allen-Bradley — two apps?
