Read CompactLogix tags without Studio 5000

Allen-Bradley Logix 5000 · free app

No L5X export, no chasing the integrator for the project file, and no engineering-software license just to look at a value. Logix controllers hand over their own tag list via EtherNet/IP, and the free LineKeeper app requests it directly: scan, connect, and in minutes you have live tags, a dashboard and an operator panel.

From an IP address to a screen, in about 15 minutes

  1. Get on the controller's network. Plant Wi-Fi that routes to the PLC VLAN, or a USB-C Ethernet adapter straight into a spare switch port. If the phone can ping the CompactLogix, the app can connect.
  2. Scan — or type the IP. One sweep of the subnet identifies EtherNet/IP controllers (and, along the way, Modbus and Siemens devices). Adding by hand is just the IP plus the CPU slot — on a compact CompactLogix it's usually 0.
  3. The tag list arrives by itself. Nothing to configure: tags, UDTs, arrays, timers, counters and I/O modules appear with live values and a search box on top.
  4. Build the dashboard. Number, gauge, LED and trend tiles across pages. Several PLCs of the same machine fit on one screen.
  5. Add the panel buttons. Start/stop pulses, latching switches, setpoints and status lamps. Full-screen mode keeps the phone awake next to the machine.
  6. Share the profile. Export it as a file and a colleague gets the whole machine — tags, dashboard and panel — on their phone.

What works and what doesn't: the Logix 5000 family over EtherNet/IP — CompactLogix and ControlLogix. Micro800, SLC-500 and PLC-5 are not supported; if your machine runs one of those, anything speaking Modbus TCP on the same network is still reachable. We'd rather tell you before you download the app.

When the tag doesn't show up in any list

Sometimes the name is no help: B3_12, N7_4, or the classic legacy tag from a migration nobody documented. Patent-pending Find by action solves it from the physical side: press the machine's real button in the rhythm the app dictates and it returns the bit that answered. For a setpoint, nudge it one step on the machine's own controls, and the app narrows the list to the tag that changed — scale factors included.

Do I need Studio 5000 or RSLogix to see the tags?

Not to read them. Logix 5000 controllers publish their own tag list over EtherNet/IP and the app requests it from the controller — no L5X export, no project file. Studio 5000 is still needed to modify the program, but not to watch, trend or write values. And if you do have an L5X export at hand, the free L5X ladder viewer reads the program's actual rungs in your browser — the values from the app, the logic from the export.

Which Allen-Bradley controllers work?

The Logix 5000 family over EtherNet/IP: CompactLogix and ControlLogix, with tags, UDTs, arrays, timers, counters and I/O modules discovered automatically. Micro800, SLC-500 and PLC-5 are not supported. If your machine runs one of those, any Modbus TCP device on the same network is still reachable.

Do I have to change the PLC program or install a gateway?

No. The app speaks the same protocol an HMI uses — EtherNet/IP — directly to the controller. Nothing is installed on the PLC, no program changes, no OPC server, no cloud account. Values go from the controller straight to your phone.

My CompactLogix won't communicate with the app — what do I check?

In order: that the phone is on the same network as the controller and can ping it; that the IP address belongs to the right Ethernet module; that the CPU slot number is correct in a multi-card chassis (a compact CompactLogix is usually slot 0); and that no ACL or VLAN is blocking port 44818. If a laptop on that network can connect to the controller, the app can too.

Can I write values from the phone?

Yes, deliberately. Reading tags, dashboards and alarms is free; writing is a one-time unlock with no subscription. Every write asks for confirmation and is validated against the point's type and limits, and hold-to-run buttons release the moment the app loses focus.

How long until I have a usable screen?

About 15 minutes. A network scan finds the controller, the tag list arrives by itself, and drag-and-drop assembles a dashboard and an operator panel with start/stop buttons. Full-screen panel mode turns the phone or a spare iPad into a temporary operator station.

Is it safe to connect to a production PLC?

Browsing and dashboards only read values — the polling load of one extra HMI. Writing is always deliberate: every write asks for confirmation and is validated against the point's type and limits, and hold-to-run buttons release the moment the app loses focus. Your own safety procedures still apply.

What if the machine mixes brands?

One machine in the app can hold several PLCs of different brands behind a single dashboard and a single panel: Logix over EtherNet/IP, Siemens S7 over S7comm, and anything speaking Modbus TCP.
