PanelView not communicating with the PLC: work the list

A panel that boots but can't reach the controller is usually a 15-minute network or shortcut fix — the terminal itself is rarely broken, and the machine is usually still running underneath. Six causes cover nearly every case; work them in order.

Quick isolation: panel or network?

Sixty seconds settles it. Put a laptop — or a phone running the free LineKeeper app — on the same network drop. If it can see the controller (the app reads a Logix tag list over EtherNet/IP with zero configuration), the PLC and the network are fine and the fault is inside the terminal's own config: shortcut, IP, firmware. If nothing on that drop reaches the PLC, stop blaming the panel and follow the cable.

If it's the terminal's firmware or hardware

Firmware updates are free but need the right utility and a maintenance window; a terminal too old to speak to a new controller generation may be better replaced than upgraded — check where your model stands on the PanelView obsolescence timeline. PanelView communication questions

Why does my PanelView say “unsupported communication protocol”?

The RSLinx Enterprise shortcut in the application references a controller type the terminal's firmware doesn't support — most often after a CPU upgrade to a newer Logix generation. Update the terminal firmware, or retarget the shortcut at a supported path. Some applications continue past the warning, but treat that as borrowed time, not a fix.

The panel boots and displays load, but values show errors — is that a comms failure?

Partially. Full comm loss errors every display; per-value errors usually mean the shortcut points at the wrong controller, the Runtime tab never got the designed path copied to it, or tags were renamed in the PLC after the .mer was compiled.

How do I check the RSLinx Enterprise shortcut on the terminal?

From the terminal's configuration mode, open RSLinx Enterprise, select the shortcut your application uses, verify it points at the actual controller, and copy the configuration to the Runtime tab. The communication paths are embedded in the .mer at compile time, so a path that only exists on your PC's Design tab never made it to the terminal.

Can I see the PLC's tags while the panel can't?

Yes — that's also the fastest isolation test.
