PanelView 550 replacement: your real options in 2026

The 2711 PanelView Standard family was retired years ago, and PanelBuilder32 — the only software that edits its projects — is no longer sold. So a dead 550 isn't a spare-part problem, it's a small migration project. Here's what each path really involves, including the comms trap that catches most of them.

What you're actually replacing

The 550 came as keypad (2711-K5A), keypad-and-touch (-B5A) and touch (-T5A) variants — and, more importantly, in a spread of communication options: DH-485, DH+, Remote I/O, RS-232, DeviceNet. The display is replaceable; the comms variant is the trap. Whatever you migrate to must either speak to the existing SLC-500 / PLC-5-era controller or wait for the controller's own migration. The sequencing advice nobody gives

If the controller behind the 550 is itself a legacy SLC or PLC-5, don't migrate the panel twice. Bridge the outage now (used unit or repair), and plan one coordinated migration — controller and panel together — on your schedule. A panel rebuilt today against SLC addressing gets rebuilt again when the controller goes Logix.

Honest limitation: if your controller only speaks DH-485 or DH+, a phone can't reach it directly either — the bridge options below apply to Ethernet-capable controllers (SLC 5/05, MicroLogix 1100/1400, any Logix). Where your 550 hangs off an Ethernet-capable PLC, the phone screen works today.

PanelView 550 questions

Is the PanelView 550 still supported?

No — the whole 2711 PanelView Standard family is retired, and PanelBuilder32, the only software that edits its projects, is no longer sold. Working units survive on the used and repair market, but every path forward eventually means rebuilding the application on a current platform.

Can I convert a PanelBuilder32 (.pba) project to a new panel?

No. There is no supported conversion from .pba to FactoryTalk View ME or Connected Components Workbench — displays are rebuilt by hand. Budget the rebuild, or bridge the outage first and rebuild calmly.

What's the drop-in replacement for a 2711-B5A?

Rockwell's migration guide maps the 550 variants to the 6-inch PanelView Plus 7 class, with adapter plates covering the panel cutout. “Drop-in” covers the hole in the door, though — the application is rebuilt, and DH+/Remote I/O comms variants additionally need a comms bridge or a coordinated PLC migration.

My 550 talks DH+ to a PLC-5 — what are my options?

Three: keep the old panel alive (used unit or repair) until the controller migrates; add a DH+ comms bridge so a modern EtherNet/IP panel can talk to the PLC-5; or do one coordinated controller-plus-panel migration. Most plants bridge the outage and schedule the real migration — repairing into a dead end forever is the only wrong answer.

Can I keep the machine running while I sort this out?

If the controller has Ethernet (SLC 5/05, MicroLogix 1100/1400, any Logix), yes — the free LineKeeper app for iPhone and iPad gives the operator live values and start/stop buttons in about 15 minutes, no PLC program changes. DH-485/DH+-only controllers need the used-unit or repair bridge instead.
