Siemens HMI died — what actually replaces it?

S7-1200/1500 note: Siemens ships these CPUs with PUT/GET communication disabled and "optimized" data blocks. When a CPU refuses, the app detects it and shows the exact TIA Portal steps to fix each case — instead of a silent timeout.

Can I just buy the same panel again?

Sometimes. Current KTP Basic models are usually orderable, but older OP/TP models and classic Comfort Panels get progressively harder to source as Siemens steers the line toward Unified Comfort Panels. And even an identical replacement arrives empty: the WinCC project must be downloaded from a compatible TIA Portal, which requires the project file.

Does my old WinCC project run on a Unified Comfort Panel?

Not untouched. Unified Comfort Panels run WinCC Unified — a different runtime — so a classic project must be migrated: screens, scripts and faceplates may need rework, and the result has to be tested. Budget engineering hours, not just the hardware price.

We can't find the project file. Now what?

That changes the math: a new panel is useless without the project, so repair (the unit keeps its project) or a rebuilt screen become the realistic paths. The phone app needs no project at all — points are added by absolute address, or found with Find by action from the machine's own buttons.

What can we do while the replacement is on order?
