What "obsolete" actually changes for you

  • Spares dry up, prices invert. Used and refurbished units of popular retired models often cost more than a bigger, newer panel — scarcity pricing. The longer you wait, the worse the trade.
  • The software chain is the real wall. PanelBuilder32 is unobtainable, old FactoryTalk View versions have licensing and OS problems, and every year makes the project files harder to open, let alone edit.
  • Repair services keep old units alive — backlights, touch layers and power sections are routinely rebuilt for $300–$1,000. That's a legitimate bridge, but it buys time; it doesn't remove the cliff.
  • Plan the migration before the failure. A migration chosen calmly costs a planned weekend. The same migration during an outage costs expedited freight, overtime and scrapped production.

PanelView lifecycle questions

Is the PanelView Plus 7 obsolete?

Series A production wound down from late 2021, but the family is not dead: PanelView Plus 7 Series B is the current generation and a near drop-in for Series A units — verify firmware version and cutout revision. If you're planning new machines, also look at the Logix-native PanelView 5510.

Is the PanelView Plus 1000 obsolete?

Yes — both the original PanelView Plus and the Plus 6 lines are retired (Plus 6 was discontinued at the end of 2022). The .mer application carries forward to a Plus 7 with firmware care, which keeps the migration mostly a hardware job.

Can I still get parts for a PanelView Standard?

Only from the used and repair market. PanelBuilder32 — the only software that edits Standard projects — is no longer sold, so even a working used unit leaves you unable to change the application. Treat any Standard panel as end-of-road and plan the rebuild.

What replaces a PanelView Component?

The PanelView 800 (2711R). It's the official successor, and Connected Components Workbench imports PanelView Component applications, so the move is usually touch-up work rather than a rebuild.

Can I keep producing while I migrate?

Usually yes — the PLC keeps running the machine. The free LineKeeper app for iPhone and iPad reads ControlLogix/CompactLogix tag lists over EtherNet/IP with zero configuration, so the operator has live values and start/stop buttons on a mounted iPad while the real migration happens on your schedule.
