Delta HMI not responding: three different problems, three fixes

"Not responding" on a Delta DOP means one of three unrelated things: the UI is frozen, the touch layer is dead, or the HMI lost the PLC and is drowning the screen in communication-error windows. Operators report all three identically — separating them takes two minutes and decides everything that follows.

The comms case: DOP ↔ DVP settings

  • Match the serial parameters exactly. In DOPSoft: Communication Parameters. Delta DVP serial defaults are 9600, 7, E, 1, ASCII, station 1 — the HMI side must mirror them field for field. One mismatch is total silence.
  • Station number: the HMI's target station must equal the PLC's actual station; after CPU swaps the station often resets to default.
  • RS-485 wiring: A/B polarity and termination — a swap can work on the bench and fail on the machine.
  • Generic Modbus instead of the Delta driver? Then the register mapping is on you. Prefer the Delta driver (it addresses D/M registers natively); if you must go raw Modbus, take the offsets from the DVP communication-protocol manual rather than guessing — the mapping is not intuitive.

The touch case

Calibration lives in the DOP system menu. If calibration won't hold or zones stay dead, it's the resistive layer — and here the economics differ from the big brands: DOP units are inexpensive enough that replacement usually beats a $300+ repair. The catch is the project: transferring it to the new unit needs the DOPSoft project file, or an upload from the old unit if upload was left enabled. Check that today, not during the outage.

Delta DOP questions

My Delta HMI freezes every few days — hardware?

Watch which screen it freezes on. A frozen UI that recurs on the same screen points at a project element — a macro loop is the classic — not hardware. Power-cycle to recover, then inspect that screen's macros in DOPSoft. Random freezes across screens with a hot cabinet lean toward power quality or aging hardware.

What are the default Delta DVP serial settings for the HMI link?

9600 baud, 7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit, ASCII mode, station 1. The DOP side (DOPSoft → Communication Parameters) must match field for field — a single mismatch produces silence or communication-error windows.

Repair or replace a DOP with a dead touch layer?

DOP hardware is inexpensive: replacement usually beats a $300+ touch repair. The real asset is the project — you need the DOPSoft file, or an upload from the old unit if upload was enabled. If neither exists, the dying panel is your only copy: back it up while it still boots.

Can I watch the PLC while the HMI is down?

Delta DVP Ethernet models (and Ethernet comm modules) speak Modbus TCP, which the free LineKeeper app for iPhone and iPad reads directly — live values and operator buttons in about 15 minutes, no PLC changes. Serial-only DVPs need a Modbus TCP gateway or the HMI fixed first.
